The two Houses

House of CommonsElected MPs — 650 constituencies. Decisions on tax and laws start here.
House of LordsAppointed peers, bishops and (a few) hereditary peers. Revises and scrutinises.

Key roles

Prime MinisterLeader of the largest party in the Commons. Lives at 10 Downing Street.
CabinetAbout 20 senior ministers chosen by the PM.
SpeakerChairs Commons debates. Politically neutral while serving.
MonarchHead of state. Opens Parliament; assents to laws; appoints PM by convention.

Devolved bodies

Scottish Parliament (Holyrood)Health, education, justice, transport.
